Transcription: The nucleus of an atom is made up of particles called protons and neutrons. When a free neutron hits the nucleus of a uranium atom, the atom becomes unstable and splits into two. It releases heat and a neutron which goes on to collide with another uranium atom. This in turn is split and so a chain reaction has begun.
